In the UNCW MSN Nurse Educator program, you can acquire the necessary tools and knowledge to successfully teach a new generation of nurses. You will learn under the instruction and caring mentorship of our faculty—who are experienced nurse educators themselves.

In this online master’s program, you will learn to effectively teach didactic, clinical and distance nursing education courses. Coursework includes advanced pathophysiology and pharmacotherapeutics, a study of social, psychological, cultural and ethical trends which shape healthcare systems, research and evidence-based practices for nursing education, an exploration of relevant teaching and learning theories, strategies, and assessments, and a study of clinical information systems.

Here’s a checklist of what you’ll need to begin the admission process for your MSN Nurse Educator degree online:

Admission Requirements:

  • Official transcripts
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing with a GPA of 3.0
  • Bachelor’s degree in nursing with a GPA between 2.7 and 2.99 and two strong recommendation letters

  1. Complete Graduate School application.
  2. Official transcripts of all college work.
  3. Current nursing license in North Carolina or:
    1. License in a compact state (where the student legally resides).
    2. The student is distance-based and will not be practicing in North Carolina while enrolled in school and has the licensure or eligibility for licensure in their primary state of residence
  4. Baccalaureate degree in nursing from a nationally accredited program.
    1. Undergraduate GPA 3.0 or above.
    2. Undergraduate GPA between 2.7-2.99 and two strong recommendation letters
  5. Completion of a statistics course with a B- or higher (need syllabus or course description).
  6. Students who have completed graduate work elsewhere must be in good standing at that institution to be eligible to take graduate courses at UNCW.
  7. An interview with faculty may be requested along with other items as needed.
  8. Select the preferred start date, based on available sessions at the time of application or decision.
  9. Application and supplemental documents must be submitted by the published deadline.

Additional Information

  1. Applicants with an overall bachelor’s degree GPA of 2.69 and lower will not be considered for admission.
  2. Nine credit hours of graduate level transferred credit may be accepted upon approval.
  3. Application for admission to the MSN-NE program will occur at 6 start dates, two in the Fall, two in the Spring and two in the Summer. Please note that sessions frequently fill ahead of published deadlines. Application cycles are open until the sessions reach capacity. Due to high demand, there is no advanced notice of application closures.
  4. Applicants must have access to a computer capable of supporting electronic mail, a web browser, a word processing program and multi-media presentations. In addition, applicants must demonstrate ability to use these computer applications.   5. A reapplication and application fee is required for students that do not attend the session accepted.

The MSN Nurse Educator online curriculum is comprised of 11 core courses (33 credit hours) and one nursing elective to total 36 credit hours.

Curriculum Notice: The School of Nursing is revising this curriculum to align with new accreditation standards. Currently enrolled students will complete the program as originally scheduled. The new curriculum will begin in August (Fall) 2026, and applications for the new curriculum will open in Spring 2026.

This course provides students with essential knowledge and skills related to research, scholarship, and evidence-based practices for the nurse educator role. Students will search, analyze, and apply evidence-based science from nursing, education, and other related disciplines to determine suitability for application to nursing education practices. Students will evaluate evidence related to innovative technology, social media, current and historical healthcare issues and trends, ethical and legal practices, and organizational, political, and institutional factors for application to curriculum design, advocacy, and change. Students will engage in scholarly activities and self-reflection while utilizing and providing available resources to develop and support professional growth for self and learners.

This course provides the foundations for the nurse educator role in academic settings with an introduction to the curriculum design process. Students will evaluate various curriculum design models and relevant educational theories. They will analyze principles of alignment and contemporary influences on curriculum development. Students will conduct an evidence-based needs assessment for a specific audience based on assessment of the learners’ development needs.

This course provides essential knowledge and skills for the nurse educator to design, develop, and deliver curricula for the laboratory, simulation, and clinical settings. Students will incorporate current healthcare policies, legal, ethical, and evidence-based practices specific to the clinical environment into their curricula. Students will devise and modify evidence-based evaluation plans incorporating clear expectations, formative and summative strategies, and constructive feedback. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to guide and support learners in their professional development, fostering safe and productive learning environments that promote reflective practices and development of clinical judgment. Pre-requisite: NSG 548 Evidence-based Assessment of Learning and Teaching Effectiveness for the Nurse Educator Role

This course provides the essential elements that define and operationalize the process of online learning. The students will apply relevant teaching and learning theories from the perspectives of education and nursing as a foundation to choose pedagogies, align and design evidence-based curriculum, facilitate learning, and analyze evaluation strategies that are appropriate to achieve the outcomes of online learning. Students will analyze evaluation data to develop continuous quality improvement plans for curriculum and their professional development as an online educator. Students will analyze curricula for alignment and effectiveness relative to current nursing and healthcare trends, professional nursing standards, the identified learning need, diverse needs of the learners, and the classroom setting. Focusing on quality improvement, patient safety, and error prevention, students will explore ways to incorporate quality and safety into nursing practice. The course also emphasizes participation in scholarly activities, leading to an understanding of the political, social, and economic forces that influence quality and safety in nursing. Students will learn to act as change agents and engage in continuous professional development for the nurse educator role. Students will engage in hands-on projects that enhance their ability to lead change, manage teams, assess programs, and navigate complex professional relationships. Key topics include leadership theories, emotional intelligence (EQ 2.0), strategic planning, financial management in academia, mentorship, stakeholder engagement, and communication strategies. By applying these concepts in experiential learning activities, nurse educators will develop confidence and expertise to influence nursing education and drive meaningful transformation for healthcare and academia. Additionally, students will develop a professional development plan to foster lifelong learning and role competence. Emphasis is placed on the scholarship of teaching and learning in nursing education, as well as the broader impact of policy, advocacy, and healthcare outcomes within academic and organizational settings. Through active engagement, students will refine their ability to navigate the evolving landscape of nursing education and contribute meaningfully to the profession. They will evaluate organizational environments for leadership and advocacy principles, create professional development plans for lifelong learning, and appraise the impact of political, social, and economic forces on the nurse educator's role. Students will participate in program evaluation and change strategies based on program assessment data to support continuous quality improvement. Additionally, students will develop inter-professional relationships with healthcare and education partners by synthesizing strategies related to external influences, stakeholder involvement, evidence-based change, conflict management, leadership, and advocacy. This course provides essential knowledge and skills related to advocacy, policy, change management, principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, budgetary processes, assessing healthcare trends, and ethical issues to contribute to the improvement of population health, healthcare finance, and health policy. The students will analyze current health policy and develop an advocacy plan of action. Students will examine how social determinants of health have impacted population health and discuss how their role as nurse educators can impact population health. Students will analyze the role of finance in healthcare and analyze the relationship between population health, healthcare, finance, and healthcare policy. The students will use informatics/artificial intelligence (AI) technology to identify learners’ diverse needs and develop learning resources to support the learners’ needs. Students will design and develop evidence-based microlearning teaching/learning strategies for academic, healthcare, or industry settings. Students will apply informatics/AI technology to develop microlearning content and assess/evaluate learning outcomes. This course explores innovative pedagogies that promote transformative nursing education. Students will learn to apply narrative, critical, feminist, reflective, digital, collaborative, and transformative pedagogies for the teaching of nursing knowledge and clinical practice. The course also emphasizes the integration of evidence-based, innovative technologies to support teaching and enhance learning.
